The Posture of Reconciliation

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10 (ESV)

“Sit up straight!” Many a parent has issued this order at the meal table. Indeed, studies have shown that one’s posture directly affects a person’s health. However, posture is not only about body position, but also the particular way or approach in dealing with the realities of life. Psalm 51 gives a picture of the posture of reconciliation.

The psalm is King David’s prayer of confession and repentance after being forced to confront a series of compounding sins recorded in 1 Samuel 11. The tragic events that spiraled out of control included lust, adultery, murder, and conspiracy. When the prophet Nathan confronted David with the whole sorry mess, he broke down, repented, and wrote the heartfelt prayer that is Psalm 51.

The psalm reveals at least three aspects of David’s posture. First, David cries to God for mercy and help, and recognizes that only God can deal with his sin. His pleas for God to deal with his sin suggest three Hebrew word pictures for forgiveness: (1) washing (vv. 2, 7), as one might scrub dirty clothes; (2) cleansing (vv. 2, 7), the picture of washing clothes in a river; and (3) blotting out (v. 1), the idea of wiping a dirty dish. These powerful images suggest something only God can do.

Second, David admits that his evil deeds toward others were also sins against God rising out of his own sinful nature. Charles Spurgeon once said, “The virus of sin lies in its opposition to God.” David recognized this. He knew that his deeds emerged from his sinful nature.

Finally, David desired a new beginning (vv. 8-12). All too often we lack the humility and moral courage to face our sins and sinful nature. As a result, we drift in a sea of fractured human relationships and alienation from God. David cries: “create in me a pure heart.” This Hebrew word, create, is always used for an act of God in which God brings about something new. David is praying for a new beginning as well as for renewal of what has been broken.

David’s prayer is a personal and poignant lament showing the posture of his heart as he sought reconciliation with God. Psalm 51 is one of the seven “penitential psalms” used in daily church services since the early church, to help God’s people to “sit up straight.”

 Psalm 51:1-2, 7-12

1 Have mercy on me, O God,

according to your unfailing love;

according to your great compassion

blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash away all my iniquity

and cleanse me from my sin.

7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;

wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,

and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence

or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation

and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

  1. Sin has such power when kept in darkness. Lord, please lead us into your light and let us have the courage, like David, to seek genuine reconciliation.

  2. Thank you Pr. Tom Keppeler!
    The meditation in this Psalm can make us feel that reconciliation comes with a profound desire to have a cleansed heart. Only The Holy Spirit can produce those inside us, I believe, if our desire exist. David desired, God did.

  3. This would make a great tattoo. Put it on your front door for when you answer. Put it on your back or garage door for when you leave. Put it on the sun visor in your car. Put it in the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, office space, everywhere!!!!!! And as your bookmark in your Bible…so that as you read His words, all doubts, sinicism, arrogance, etc. does not interfer…

    “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

    Also keeps you from being stressed out by the crazy drivers on the road, all the construction zones, family issues, etc?????

  4. I love David’s story. His story is a good example of being prayerful, being human (victim to sin), exercising sincere repentance, and continuing to believe in Christ during the ups and downs in life. David’s story (and the fact that he was after God’s heart) makes me reconsider how I perceive Christians who commit adultery, murder, etc. If David can still be highly favored by God then who is to say Christians today who commit unspeakable crimes aren’t in fact still favored by God. Interesting.

  5. Thank God for the wonderful work, this ministries is doing, for God loves us unconditional, He is faithful Father, to God be the glory.

  6. Father, your generous gift of your Son represents your love, grace and mercy and have wiped out my sin record and scrubbed away my guilt and sins. I know how bad I’ve been, my sin stares me in my face all the time, when I sin Lord you’re the One I hurt the most, and as much as I may try I can’t hide from you, you know the full impact my sin has…
    Lord Jesus, you know the facts about me, I’ve been out of step with you for a long time, in the wrong since before I was born, Lord I ask that you consume me with your truth from the inside out, so my life will reflect you…
    Holy Spirit, make a fresh start in me, shape a new beginning from the chaos of my life. Thank you for not throwing me out like trash when I mess up, Spirit of God, thank you for your commitment to breathe holiness in me and daily refresh me…
    Lord God, I am now fully committed to teaching others your ways so the lost can find their way home. You have saved so many of us from an impending death sentence, I can’t help but to praise you and tell others. Lord, help me praise you like never before, and may I never get used to this feeling of adoration and thankfulness and take you for granted. I know you do not expect me to be perfect, you do not want me to be religious. I learned how to worship you when my pride was shattered, you then reconciled this heart and made it ready for your love, your complete healing and your eternal presence…
    Almighty One, I look forward to the day when all your living sacrifices will be at your feet giving you the purest worship for eternity…
    HALLELUJAH HALLELUJAH HALLELUJAH!!!
    Lord God, the season of obedience is here…
