Son of David, Lord of David

Day 12 of Knowing Him: An Easter Devotional (view all days)

Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David? David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:

“Sit at my right hand

until I make your enemies

a footstool for your feet.’”

David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?” (Luke 20:41-44)

Jesus had many ways of saying seemingly outrageous things about himself. He said that he was the Lord of the Sabbath, and so he could decide what he would or would not do on the Sabbath. He let people bow down at his feet and worship him. He forgave people their sins. He let them use names for him that were reserved for God. One must conclude that he was either a completely deluded person, or a charlatan, or he really was who he claimed to be. There really are no other alternatives.

He was and is the Lord of King David, and, more than that, Lord of heaven and earth.

He humbled himself and took a lowly spot, even though he is Lord of all.

Ponder This: If Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords, how does that make you look at the world differently?

would you send me all the different bible verses, where this is mentioned, please. I can’t understand why do many doctrines that use the bible as God’s words still devate whether Jesus is God, the son of God, or only a prophet.

  2. Ignatius Boustin says:

He is the only One who spoke with authority over death, changed people, gave hope for the hopeless, and drew the dividing line between the self and the selfless – forever. All this through forgiveness and repentance for forgetting Him and carrying my own worries when He is always there to carry them for me and to protect me for trusting Him.

  3. Kim Maltby says:

He is the Holy One and made Himself like us and gave up His crown to save us from our sins. King of Kings and Lord of Lords. When He came to be a man, He became like us. I recall a time recently when we all sat down at dinner and when 2 of us at the table wanted to give thanks to God for our meal. I heard some sign, like ok here we go, and someone just refused. Well, it went through my mind this is what Jesus went through all the time and everywhere He went. So, I could almost feel what He would have felt at the time. We prayed anyway, just like Jesus would have done.

  4. Margie says:

Through my faith and education I have always believed in Him and have accepted it with thanks. What makes me look at the world in a somewhat different way is watching humanity worship rock stars and movie stars and humans who are “really out there”. Why can’t humans ponder on the Christ more and learn to know Him more. Prayers for all humanity. Hopefully by prayer more humanity will ponder about Christ as the living Lord during his time on earth. We all need to worship Him more and not humans just because they have majestic material things.

  5. Shara Sagraves says:

Margie you’re right all these majestic material people want to worship and idolize whom they desire is worthy. But because Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords and never changing, he will prove that in the last days and all the majestic material people will then bow and worship as they should have in the first place, but sadly for them it will be to late. We as christians need to pray for these souls that so desperately need Jesus before it is too late for them.

  6. Matt says:

    This one baffles me

    • Mel Lawrenz says:

Matt – Jesus’ point is this: if David wrote of his future descendant (the Messiah), calling him “Lord,” doesn’t that mean that Messiah must be greater than David? The way for Messiah to be greater than David is if he is more than human (i.e. the Son of God). So Jesus is using Psalm 110 to say that Messiah (himself) is greater than David. A remarkable claim!

  7. Helen says:

Jesus is LORD! As John 1 says: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend[a] it. And verse 14 says:
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. NKJV

Gods Word Translation says: 1In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was already with God in the beginning.
3Everything came into existence through him. Not one thing that exists was made without him.

4He was the source of life, and that life was the light for humanity.

5The light shines in the dark, and the dark has never extinguished it.
14The Word became human and lived among us. We saw his glory. It was the glory that the Father shares with his only Son, a glory full of kindness[b] and truth.

Jesus is My savior, my fortress, my conforter, my present help in time of trouble, He is my all and all. I cannot make it without Him.

  8. Michelle (South Africa) says:

The kings and lords in this world are mere humans – just like I am! The is a greater King and a greater Lord – Jesus Christ. The one whose Kingdom will never fall.

  9. Glen Anderson says:

my thoughts are confused about Jesus lack of adressng the slavery question How could he not tell people not to have slaves?

  10. Geo says:

Since He is King of Kings and Lord of Lord, I, a mere mortal is humbled by the great things He has done. There are times I have for things I am need of happening and I have to take grip and remind myself that there is nothing He cannot do, maybe not the result I want but it will happen in another way in due course. That is the greater God at work!

  11. Bob Stevens says:

Don’t get me wrong, your message today was a good one. But when quoting C. S. Lewis, it would really be nice to give him credit for the quote. Just a thought.

  12. Donna Tung says:

It makes me look at the world with more awe, and I must admit, fear. The absolute hugeness (there really is no word to describe how BIG God truly is), the vastness of space, the truth that He tossed all the stars into the Heavens. And yet, His eye is on the sparrow, on all of His creation in fact. What an incredible mystery to perceive. Even with the faith the Lord has given me to believe the unbelievable, who am I to try and put all of this into words the world will heed? Holy Spirit, please empower me because I am nothing without You!!

  13. Rev. Arthur James Felton Sr. says:

Regardless to what happens. Because he is Lord. Everything is completly under his control.
Colossians 1:16, 17 says”For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” (kjv)
    Amen.

  14. Donna Tung says:

This goes so far beyond our finite ability to comprehend. Of course Jesus is from Eternity past, with the Father and Holy Spirit. As man, His absolute obedience to the Father allowed Him to make many radical, although true statements, for example, that He was the Son of David. He only spoke what the Father told Him to. As Jesus, He knew what right order and alignment were, even though He was God. I feel so honoured to be part of God’s plan to share the truths that will set people free. Thank you Lord.

  15. Linda Brown says:

The world is my temperary home…We must share the good news with the world..We must be brave and step out in faith to love and share God’s message..

  16. Mike Burke says:

For me it’s a difficult thing to get my head around. I am in awe of the fact that the disciples could have sat around a tree in the shade listening to a lesson from the Living God. What an experience.

  17. Linda Parker says:

it makes me feel so happy and thankful.
The truth is so simply fact, THAT IS THE WONDERFUL BLESSING of it all.

  18. Linda Parker says:

Ididnt duplicate this was the first time i wrote, But truth is always the same.GOD’S TRUTH that is!!

  19. rod branham says:

In a world where no one is what they claim to be, it is refreshing to know our Lord is who he claims to be!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Mary says:

Know Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords I do not fear the future — I know he has won the battle and everything that happens in this world is for good and His glory.

  21. Daniel Anyona says:

The Master of the universe is also the master of sabbath! I think that doing good on sabbath day is the spirit that I believe in and the son and Lord of David surely has something nice to do on the sabbath. My prayer is that the Lord will do something good for me this coming sabbath!

  22. G. Falls says:

For he is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to him. Being sons of the resurrection.

  23. Linda Parker says:

GOD IS GOOD IS LOVE IS GOD

  24. Darlene Boone says:

There is a song that says: You are King of creation and King of my life King of the Land and the sea, You were King of the heavens before there was time and King of all Kings you will be.

Jesus Christ is King of everything whether we acknowledge it or not. You see this King wants a personal relationship with each and everyone of His creatures (mankind) but, He will not force His Lordship upon you. You must desire Him to be your Savior, Lord and King. The word says, all who accept Him, He will give the right to become children of God. John 1:12

  25. Raceah Lea John says:

When I think of Jesus as being the King of kings and the Lord of lords, I feel so lucky that I am His kid. I feel so pampered and loved that He would keep me safe, provide for me, and be always near…never far off, always attentive, listening and watching, working for me a great future.

Oh, I feel so light and awed to be so loved though I am all that I am.

  26. Courtney says:

Fully grasping that Jesus is the Lord of Lords is a confession on our part. To do so implies His full deity and acknowledging Him as such, He then can have no rival. Who is like Him? Who could resist Him? The demons surely could not. I cling to the fact that Hebrews tells us that, “all things are put under His feet” even though the verse goes on to say ,” now we see not all things under Him,…but we see Jesus…” the rivalry is not in heaven friends, it’s in our hearts, only we can dethrone the rivals we have put there in His place. Until we do as the first commandment tells us, “thou shalt have no other God’s before me” can we truly say He is the Lord of Lords. As we approach Easter it’s even more precious and imminent that people consider and decide who is Jesus, like Christ asked Peter, “whom say ye that I am” may we answe like Him. “thou art the Christ”!
